The history of Gandhibhavan is the life story of Dr. Punalur Somarajan. His entry into the world of charity wasn’t haphazard. Rajan was an orphan of sorts. He lost his mother Saradha in his early childhood making him yearn for motherly affection and kisses of love. So he thought everyone whom he saw lying on wayside unnoticed by anyone lacked what he lacked – A mothers love. As a result the destitute whom he met on his way to school grab his attention and haunted his mind. While in the classroom or sitting in front of the lunch box or buckling down to study his mind was overwhelmed by this single thought – “what makes someone an orphan?”
Chellappan, Rajan’s father was also a Samaritan. Rajan used to see his father bringing the poor and drifters home. He bathed them, gave a pair of clothes and a square. When Rajan grew up into Dr. Somarajan, he found the answer which magged him in his childhood. That answer morphed in to a more practical solution to the question. That is Gandhibhavan. A great institution which strives to blot out the word “orphan” from our social discourse. It is virtually an asylum for many.

Gandhibhavan had started its activities in the year 2002. But this was solely to learn and propagate the visions and principles of Gandhian thoughts based on the fundamental principles of love and peace.
But later, while in a journey founder of Gandhibhavan, Punalur Somarajan met with a destitute, an 85 year old unmarried lady, on his way.

Heavenly Home for the Destitute Children
Gandhibhavan has a children’s home that is dedicated to provide a safe home for socially and financially deprived children and for care and protection of children in conflict with law. This home is for children of all ages upto 18 years, from kindergarteners to college going children,. The home provides a host of facilities that include comfortable accommodation, nutritious food, proper and appropriate medical treatment, skill development training, physiotherapy and recreation facilities. They are also given general education, art, sports, culture, music training. The purpose and vision of the home is to ensure a safe and loving environment for these children who have been unfortunate not to have received the love and affection of their families and loved ones. The home depends on the generous and loving contributions of kind donors from India and all over the world for its day to day working and survival.
