Established on 3rd July 1994 in Gurgaon, Deepashram shelters and cares for at present 53 mentally and/or physically handicapped boys and men ranging in age from 10-35 years old. Deepashram is run by the Society of the Missionaries of Charity Brothers of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The center works to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society children with mild mental retardation through education and training. However, many of the boys lack the percentage of mobility that allows autonomy; thus they require constant care from Deepashram staff and volunteers.Deepashram depends on contributions from collaborators and benefactors for the daily upkeep of the center and physical and medical needs of the boys, which include check-ups, neurological screenings, psychological assessments, and physiotherapy.
OUR MISSION
The number of residents around the Deepashram is 83 in total. At present 46 orphans, abandoned, homeless and physically and mentally challenged boys or better differently able inmates find a home and shelter here. Their age varies from 8 to 35 yrs. Most of them suffer from epilepsy and need a daily medication. These boys have nobody and most of them are not self-sufficient and need our help, love and care.
Our aim is to help them to develop certain skills and make them less dependent. After the physical, medical, psychological and emotional assessment is made a curriculum is prepared for their training and rehabilitation.
We the brothers and the working staff are their friends, relatives. These boys have come from different states of India, different backgrounds, cultures, customs, and religions. But they live as one family under the same roof. Most of them came from the other institutions and missionaries of Charity sisters, while others were brought by the Police, Medical superintendents of Hospitals, neighbors, Ngo’s, etc.

OUR HISTORY
On the 3rd July, 1994, the feast of St. Thomas the apostle of India, Fr. Sebastian M.C. the Superior General and the society member brothers started a community in the area of Sec.4 in Gurugram, Haryana, India. Deepashram which means ‘House of Light’. Deepashram is registered with ‘The Missionary Brothers of Charity Contemplative’ as a society with the Indian Government, in the state of Haryana.
We are known in the Roman Catholic Arch Diocese of New Delhi as the Missionaries of Charity Brothers Contemplative of Mother Teresa of Kolkata.
On the 18th November, 1995 the building is inaugurated by our Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata and blessed by the present Archbishop Rt. Rev. Vincent Concessao, and the Auxiliary Bishop of New Delhi. Also present were Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala M.C., co-founder of this Society, Br. Damian, Br. Mathew and several benefactors, friends and neighbors. After the brothers shifted to the new building, the society brought 4 orphan boys from the MC. Sisters at Nirmal Hriday – New Delhi (a home for destitutes). These lived in the first and oldest building on the compound, which is presently being used for Physiotherapy. With God’s blessing the number of brothers and children kept growing. The need for more space and shelter became more and more urgent and evident. Thus we decided to build a bigger house. Four years later on the 18th Nov. 1999 the building was blessed by late Archbishop Allan de Lastic of happy memory. At that occasion Father Sebastian Vazhakala MC., Superior General, Br. Damian MC. and other members of the community were present.
